Timing is Everything.

Is now the right time to look for a new position?

As with any major life change, there is no real “right time” to look for a new position.  There are lots of “wrong” times but no set right time.

Rather than asking yourself when is the right time, ask yourself why you want to search for a new position.  The answer to this question should tell you if now is the right time.  There are lots of good reasons why it’s time to embark on the uncharted waters of job hunting.  Has the culture changed in your office?  Are you bored?  Are there whispers of more lay-offs?  Or is it simply time to make a change?  Most likely you’ve answered yes to one, or more, of these questions.  If so, then yes, now is the right time.

Now that you’ve decided it’s time to make a move, get ready for a long and sometimes bumpy ride.  Like any other process, the activity of the job market has peaks and valleys.  It has been difficult to discern these cycles in today’s economic climate but there are slow times and busy times to keep in mind when beginning your search.

Traditionally, the weeks around any major holiday are bad.  Think about it, what are you doing around the various holidays?  Traveling, shopping, going on vacation, spending time with family, planning a get together?  Well, guess what?  The hiring managers are doing the same thing!

My best advice to you when beginning your search is to remember the 5 P’s.

  • Be prompt and accommodating when replying to an employer's inquiry as to your availability for meetings or interviews
  • Be prepared when you walk in for an interview
  • Have a positive attitude and outlook; remember to smile when speaking with people, even if it is a telephone interview
  • Be polite when answering their questions even if your resume already has the answers
  • Most of all, be patient when waiting for them to make the hiring decision

Don’t get discouraged if your resume goes unanswered for a few days to a few weeks. This is normal at any time of year.  That doesn’t necessarily mean the recipient isn’t interested.  It usually means that they have 73 other things on their to-do list that all come before reviewing resumes for a particular position.  Just make sure you’re ready to move along in the process when they are and follow their lead.

Happy searching!
